Ok real talk - does anyone actually open the camera via the composer? noticed many apps (including X, Threads) now just show a gallery icon and nothing else

since snapchat etc. i've lost trust that any apps I use will actually use the photo API and not just screenshot a video stream on android. also i want photos i take to be in my gallery and i don't trust that if i take a photo in app it will also put it in my gallery.

Oh god I totally forgot about that haha. what a trainwreck wreck of an app and good point about the gallery too

If I had to guess, dedicated camera apps are now significantly better than what you can reasonably offer in-app in terms of features and UX people expect etc.

Never. Always take cameras in the camera app cause I don’t know if I’m going to get even basic crop/etc. tools

I've never had a moment where I was writing a post and suddenly thought "oh I better take a picture right now".

I have very infrequently done it in apps like discord, if I’m actively chatting to someone and need to take a picture of like, my desk, or the sky, or something. But I can’t see myself doing it in bluesky

I guess if you do it consistently enough it becomes muscle memory. Even in those cases I still find myself reaching for the camera app before I realize I can do it through the app.

Yes. We may all have 429,295,204 photos on our phones but sometimes you just need to snap one for that perfect skeet.

not even once. i don't think most people take pictures exclusively for social media and nothing else and even when they do it's more natural to use the camera app and then the share menu
