Discover is now *really good*, can’t wait for it to start including more “for you” kinda content

It's gotten MUCH better! 🤞 It's showing as much relevant "for you" stuff as the old "For you" by skygaze.io used to + moderate amount of "discover" posts. I was thinking to create something like "My Cluster+/Supercluster+" that will give similar wider reach experience and now I don't have to 😊.

yeah, the goal is to create one really solid algorithm that can deliver a good experience for what people expect out of a twitter-like timeline, so we can suggest it as the default to new users before they start exploring custom feeds

Yes. A good feed like that is essential to user retention. I've seen too many people join from Xitter, then say "timeline empty and boring" and leave before I had a chance to offer them a custom feed that works and that there's actually a very lively community they might want to engage with.

Hey, just out of curiosity, is following hashtags something that you've been considering? (I think not enough people use hashtags here yet for this to be useful, but I know it's something that people used to Mastodon ask about) Also btw, are Tumblr-style external hashtags coming someday finally? :D

1. I think there’s been discussions along those lines, not seen any movement towards it though 2. Ah yeah, maybe some day idk

the mastodon way of following tags would be nice, even if it's just 1 feed made by you guys to do it, it feels streamlined & almost easier than swapping tabs (although I'm lazy)

I had this thought the other day when I was recommending someone’s set of feeds made from location based weather hashtags. (I think those feeds are solely single hashtag based.)

i remember thinking this place was dead when I joined two weeks later I saw a tip about updating the For You filter to show all replies instead of those with at least one like and it became a whole new site that initial experience is everything glad to see so much thought going into it

It's tempting to agree, but I also think we shouldn't underestimate the impact of more people not joining/leaving bsky on the future of this network and healthy decentralized social media in general.

True. I like BlueSky Social. It translates posts ya can’t read!! Most Accts I’ve come across in here are nice decent folks who aren’t fascist or cruel❤️❤️

i need a discover without people i follow sprinkled in. i browse all of my following feed before switching to discover then see a lot of the same things again.

My preferred version of "for you" would come with a reverse chron option. Is that doable? Or does it defeat this algorithm's purpose somehow?

Samuel
yeah idk if that’s possible, it wouldn’t really make sense to fit topic posts into a rev chron timeline because if they’re new posts we can’t yet figure out if they’re good yet
2
jack
😂 that makes it sound like you guys are manually sorting it through each account in a sweatshop 💀

he's quick that's for sure.. ..probably practicing all through the closed beta last year :)

I think that’s just Following. because topic posts will de facto be older, since we only show them if we think they’re good, so we have to wait for them to get some likes first
George S
Since I started checking, Discover has always included people I already follow as well as [some other stuff]. So I rarely check both when I log in. That said ;-) it's kinda reminiscent of Google+ Incoming, so #MoreLikeThisPlease would be OK.

Yeah, iirc I created it a while ago and then the bsky whats-hot feed was renamed to "Discover", so now we have two :D

Ha ha no. Discover is still littering the feed withe the same kinds of content I’ve constantly flagged “see less of”. Its automated algorithm is untrainable.
Patrick Wynne
Discover will only be “really good” once it no longer includes accounts I already follow. I don’t need to discover those, I already know about them! But generally I’m pretty happy with the other stuff it serves up, so good job.
Steve Brady
I've been using Discover almost all the time. Rarely check any other feeds(?), streams(?).

Agreed. This is my favorite tab and seems to have gotten noticeably better in the past few weeks, greatly improving my enjoyment of the app in general. Thanks!
