Furiosa thoughts: It’s unfortunate that you inevitably have to compare it to the best film ever made, but it’s an admirable effort. Some great action scenes, as good as any in Fury Road (loved the octoboss fight), and Hemsworth was great. I’m looking forward to rewatching Fury Road recontextualised

and, like, really, this was finishing up a job that had been left half-done during the production of Fury Road; the 2015 game has a bunch of references to the plot of Furiosa, because they were originally planning to release something like The Animatrix to hype up the main event

the references are mostly in the readable character bios: I remember thinking "did I miss something or are like half of these stories talking about some story revolving around a character who was not in the movie or this game" (Dementus)

Apparently even all of that was a scale-down after plans to film Fury Road and a prequel simultaneously fell apart. A lot of the unused material apparently ended up in the videogame and a comics seriously. TBH, I feel like having to make wholly separate movies probably made for better movies.

Hemsworth is the runaway star of it to me. Really love Dementus and his half successful half "I clearly dont know what I'm doing and I'm in way over my head" flip. For some reason when the warboy says the citadel and he immediately fires back "the whatadel?" I lost my shit

If you had watched it in 2014 it would have seemed unbelievably balls to the wall but compared to Fury Road it feels like it has the pacing of a Tarkovsky movie

I'll be adopting her aesthetic as soon as I have some motor oil to smear on my forehead. Prob going to the women's march like that.

Overall I feel Fury Road is the better movie but I think Chris Hemsworth is an overall better villain. And Anya-Taylor Joy easily matches Charlize Theron as Furiosa.

I'm not so interested or enthusiastic about it. I think the Mad Max franchise is suffering the same franchise fatigue as many others. Which is a bit heartbreaking for me, because I hate to see good stories milked dry...😞

I was afraid of that going in. Instead, Miller reinvigorates everything by totally leaning into the idea hinted at in previous movies that there's no continuity here, these are just campfire stories being told about these legendary figures of the Wasteland. He changes the meaning of franchise.

I absolutely hated the ending. Highlighted the worst part of the film (OK... this was furiosa's origin, but why did she stay at immortan joe's place for the next 5-10 years, what did she do?)

she was his imperator! kinda extremely obvious that after Praetorian Jack died she lost her shot at escape, and it took her until Fury Road to try again in earnest

I guess? Wasn't extremely obvious to me. The warmed over star wars rogue one ending made me physically cringe too. Rest of the picture was great

it's ultimately much closer to what Miller did in the original films - more worldbuilding, more story - than Fury Road which is a singular piece of 2-hour-action-chase-filmmaking.

I don't think any of the commentaries I have read get it right. The problem with Furiosa is that there was no humor. It was too dark and needed something light to contrast with the dark. I walked out impressed, but with no desire to recommend it to my friends.

Sure, the "needing to exist" threshold is lower for films than, say, vaccines against deadly diseases, but even by film standards a Fury Road prequel felt superfluous. I'm just not used to superfluous films being this good!

I totally get what you're saying; I just feel like a well-told story is self-justifying,reflexive thing. It has no goal other than to exist for its own sake.A well-told "prequel" or a well told "sequel" or a well told self contained story are all just iterations of the same thing- well told stories.
