revelation: Bluesky's moderation system is basically the same as Terra Ignota's legal system

1 27explaining composable moderation to an uninformed and angry discourser: so how much Ada Palmer have you read
1 4 46Yeah i was reading the series quite recently before we started in on moderation system design
2 28It informed a lot of my ideas about moderation as well. This explains a lot, actually.
1 17I love this so much! And very much agree. Thinking about different philosophies of how/why people want moderation & making separate logics for them.
3 27Terra Ignota is one of the few sci-fi series i've read that actually presents a compelling and novel take on future governance. Thank you for that, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
1 1 15Delighted to hear it! People thinking and discussing those ideas was the big hope!
1 9Yep. One of the fundamental patterns I kept seeing over and over is that there was no way to escape bad (by whatever personal definition) moderation except by making a completely new space, which would inevitably only attract the most frustrated and cantankerous people from the old space.
1 11And Terra Ignota presented in its way a very clever, if flawed in its own ways, alternative to that sort of thing. It's one of my absolute favourite series for a reason.
1 8In research on censorship we call that the Early Adopter Effect, that the 1st adopters of new information technologies always included those who were being silenced under older systems, thus including the most feared voices & making them suddenly disproportionately loud. This is my current research
1 5 26We see this in all stages, from the printing press pamphlet wars of the 1500s, to radical early radio, to the use of the mimeograph/ditto machine by radical groups ranging from civil rights groups & LGBT communities to the KKK.
3 1 17… waiit… (looks at the profile… looks at the thread above… looks at the profile again…)
5we had an alternative design at some point that was even more Terra Ignota style, with publicly known jurisdiction/affiliation for each account
2 8also the way minors are treated in terra ignota is interesting, was just thinking about having an advisory council of teenagers or something like that 🤔
folks who run their own individual mastodon instance have Black Law energy
