it's the training that's absurdly expensive. the actual eval is cheap. that's why the piles of AI features in your phone's camera don't drain the battery. ...depending on the model, the parameters, the API pricing system, and other stuff

as a rule of thumb, if it's the free tier it's not an energy hog. if it was that expensive to run they wouldn't let you do it for free.

did some more research and it looks like gpt4o was made more widely available for free specifically because it has a ton of efficiency improvements that make it use a lot less resources when queried the AI energy rating folks haven't analyzed it yet though, so idk the exact numbers
