comes in most package managers/software centres anyway (at least from every distro I’ve tried lol) — enable proton and you’re all good

apparently they all work now, the Steam Deck being linux based Valve decided to just fix it

i don’t know enough about this tbh but i’ve always been a little skeptical about “it works on steam deck” meaning “it works great on linux”. i’m sure it can work great on linux but i’ll be damned before i spend 3 weeks getting that working correctly 😭

with that said though i think steam deck incentivizing good operation on linux is dope

I think there's some kind of incentive but Proton is pretty solid and I think valve is fine with devs testing against that, full porting isn't necessary unless you want to use native APIs

I have just like, regular Fedora on my laptop and steam installed fine, and every game that is verified on Steam Deck works fine. Proton is a miracle, I swear.

I have a windows desktop that’s just for games that I haven’t touched in 3 years. I’m actually stunned at how little work I have to put in to get things running. The work Valve devs have done is crazy to me

it’s insane how well proton works at times it feels quicker for me on linux than windows

In some cases it is! At one point Elden Ring ran better on the Deck than on PC because Valve could make compatibility scripts to precompile shaders, which the game was doing on console but not PC versions

Ugh, Elden Ring, another game that ran afoul of my “can’t play games that don’t pause” rule. I’m sure it’ll still be fun in a few years, right?

If I didn’t have kids, I might be tempted to play Valorant, which doesn’t work because to they install a windows rootkit of an anti cheat. I can’t play games that don’t have a pause button anymore, though, so it’s a moo point

cool! this is definitely awesome news. i haven’t daily drove linux in a long time because of doing native mobile dev but i might have to get back into it at some point. there are some games i’d like to check out (and istg i cant use windows)

i installed a macOS vm on linux mint lol but i couldn’t get graphics acceleration to work other than that pretty cool experiment but yeah I don’t recommend that for you lol, you’d be running a vm of an iphone in a vm for macOS

that said asahi linux is pretty cool, if you wanted to try it on a silicon Mac. it splits the partition to dual-boot it

jack
ooh cool for me I couldn’t get the Fedora one working we’ll, there were driver issues with the cursor I think. also the colours were so oversaturated for some reason lol

jack
😂 I think Asahi is being actively developed on then it’ll be apart of the linux kernel? iirc

one thing to watch out for is graphics drivers right now: nVidia is finalllllly putting a lot more effort into theirs but it's still a lil' shaky. supposedly Intel/AMD are very happy out of box tho

Yea, I still have to have a Mac mini so I can build stuff for iOS, but adb has worked pretty well for me, and I’ve been able to do android dev reasonably well on Linux, but the games have been the most striking thing to me
