birds are still notoriously hard to identify via computer vision, as I learned the hard way making my bird pics feed... there's just so much variety and different features across the realm of "birds"
Yeah that's just the short answer for laypeople, the long answer is that it's impossible with how the protocol currently works and finding a good solution is very difficult.
Basically it never can or will work exactly like twitter, and despite that being unfortunate it's actually a good thing.
would a twitter-circles like system be easier? idk much about this stuff but i would assume that like because they would be a new kind of post you wouldn't have to deal with altering how the public ones already work or something
The issue is more to do with the way content is stored and retrieved. Since ATproto (the underlying protocol that powers Bluesky) is federated, you need a way for users on server A to authenticate with server B in order to read private posts stored on server B.
hm what i understood from what had read on their github was a bit different (that they have a problem making *anything* private with how everything is designed) but yeah that really makes sense as a why
It’s true that most people are using Bsky servers (for now), but there are already hundreds of independent servers on the network, so any protocol change has to be compatible with the larger federated network. I don’t know if private accounts are totally impossible, but they’re difficult for sure.
they probably should (probably have already) take a look at how stuff like [matrix] works
because they do have e2e (don't think that would even work on private accounts because of the fact they need to be able to unpriv, but hey they can do that) federated chatrooms, so it IS possible, fortunately
I work in CS for a B2B CRM platform and some requests we get are so wildly specific, even if we could do it they are the only person that would use it!
pinned posts should be easy (a list of record references in the profile should do it). Private accounts would probably require a lot more consideration though, total reworks of the "Authenticated Transfer" protocol....
I mean— a private account would be nice so I could post photos.
I don't ger the thing with pinned locations, though. You can just tell people in the post caption.
