lowkey want to make an authenticator app. Authy is functional but looks like ass, I could do so much better. however security is maybe not my forte. hmm

I know someone at Google who wrote their own password manager. While working alongside Tavis Ormandy who spend a couple of years breaking password managers. The hubris.

imo the solution for those bad apps for me have been just using 2FA in password managers / passkeys. but the push notification auth apps are made by the devil to taunt me

what's the main place it backs up? my main worry about moving to another service outside of authy is losing access to my 2fa codes.

I recently switched (quite painfully because manual) from authy to the open source 2fas - highly recommended if you decide not to make your own one ;)

One of my top criteria for a project is, if I screw up can I tell everyone, “hey, at least no really important personal data was lost”. I didn’t mess up your bank account. etc.

Authy is the only authenticator that won’t let you back up or export your codes. If you’re unfortunate enough to primarily use Authy, moving away is an unnecessarily arduous process.

Iirc authenticator apps don’t generate any keys, so I don’t think you need to care much about security
