wolt app is straight up hilarious. feels like a powerpoint presentation made by someone who just discovered slide transitions, and honestly I respect that

flutter is the number one framework for making nauseating and vertigo-inducing apps

huh I might be wrong then! it’s definitely not RN (straight up not possible to do those dumb transitions yet), but seems like you might be right that it’s just their merchant app that’s flutter. its just a native iOS app - sorry for the flutter slander then!!

nah you’re on to something, when i got Rappi for ordering food in colombia it was like “why is everything in the app… moving around like this…” it was flutter, it’s always flutter

Oh right. I was wrong. Flutter uses the Impeller engine in favour of the old Skia engine. Both use Metal on iOS and Vulkan on Android with a hardware abstraction layer in between. To create a universal API for the Impeller engine.

yep, a completely custom renderer (which is how it’s crossplatform). different to React Native, which instead uses native platform views on each platform (and thus can leverage uikit)

the main app is RN though, they only used flutter in their "for restaurants" app

(I saw wolt on the flutter website and assumed it was the customer app, cause it doesn’t feel like a native one at all)

huh, i remember seeing some RN roles open a while back, interesting that they just pivoted to native then

like I gotta respect the execution, it’s a super well polished app. but also wtf were they thinking

Well they could also have put menus on the walls of a virtual dungeon and make you crawl corridors. "Hey, you there! Follow me through this secret passage for 10% off your next order."

just one of the many things that can be accomplished if you're not beholden to contorting your app to the platform standards (okay I'm not a fan of this effect either, I admit it!)

heh yeah I mean the app made me respect flutter a whole bunch more in terms of making fluid and well-polished experiences. but there’s no fixing bad taste lmao

Compose also makes animation/transition APIs so simple that making crazy stuff isn't out of reach, but somehow most developers seem to stay sane... a little too sane sometimes given the power they have (i blame Material UI for that, people are lazy and just use the defaults)

Regardless of framework, what frustrates me most is seeing an app maxxing on crazy transitions users don't need, but forget or break basic animations that we'd expect from a fluid responsive UI, or just straight up shitty UX
