has anything of note ever been built with Kotlin Multiplatform? I didn’t see anything I’ve ever used on their showcase page

— POSTS DELETED — It appears I was using a region-locked version of the Forbes app and most likely not the one referred to in the showcase. I have deleted the post criticising the app, since I don’t think it was necessarily KMP

anyway in conclusion, seems like KMP is a reasonable but not super ambitious tool for sharing non-UI Kotlin code between platforms. Compose MP is the actual RN competitor, but is too early to really dunk on and has not got much adoption yet. thread over, goodnight!

This is the current sweet spot we use it for. We have several bits of sharing like backend code generated for JVM and JS so we can run in webviews on the clients and native JVM in the backend. We also share types/serialisation between backend, Android and iOS to create a compile time contract

Yeah, I prefer it to Venmo for sending/receiving money. It does like a hundred other things now (stock market, taxes, bitcoin, rewards programs, debit card, etc), but I just use the basic functions. I'm also a bit biased because I worked at the parent company (formerly called Square) a while back.

The case studies page already linked by others is the go-to place for examples - we're working on updating it with more entries, we're definitely behind there! For some notable ones... McDonald's, Philips, Duolingo, Bolt, Square, Meetup, X, Google Workspace (specifically Docs) would be a few.

From experience working on morpho (and this is part of why i dropped the project), it's still got a ways to go before it's good and stable and actually multiplatform.

Like someone mentioned before, I've been building a Kotlin Multiplatform and Compose multiplatform bluesky client. The iOS app looks like this: bsky.app/profile/tunj... The app works offline, and has really nice animations. The libraries do what they say on the tin.

Room 2.7.0-rc02 is out which fixes a NullPointerException when compiling with KSP on iOS, which means the tip of tree commit of Heron compiles again on iOS!

Having worked with react native professionaly, one thing KMP and CMP do a lot better than react native is insets and edge to edge management for apps. React Native is still superior for web, and SEO stuff and is definitely more mature, but in a few years I think KMP and CMP will be hard to ignore.

I also find animations, especially shared element transitions significantly easier on CMP. The current bluesky react native app is very light on animations, it feels very "blocky".

I've only heard of partial implementations in larger projects personally. I see the value but not enough for a re-write for most teams I guess

at one point we built a hackathon app on it, ended up not pursuing anything further bc there wasn’t good support for protobuffers (yet, this was like 2022)

My previous company laid me off to pursue a contractor-built KMP rewrite instead of the refactors i spent 6-months advocating for. Took them over a year to get to market.
