people are not ready for exactly how anticlimactic bsky-sans-bsky is going to be

turns out you can actually make decentralised social that doesn’t make a bunch of fundamental compromises that makes the UX suck ass. who knew!

anti-climactic = good, to be clear. your reaction to being on a different appview should be “wait, what changed? it seems to be exactly the same in every single way?”

ok but for real the level of insecurity whenever something in the different appview works, of “shit did it actually work or somehow revert to bsky’s appview” it’s indistinguishable.

Lol yeah, I was thinking about how I can make sure - there are probably some differences in the JSON response structure because of missing features in AppViewLite, right? Or at least it shouldn't have label info there.

I disagree, I think atproto reached a significant milestone today that the Mastohater crowd will have a difficult time overcoming unless they start thinking about being distributed

it's super exciting! but what's so exciting is that the UX should be completely identical

oh I know we just make the ones that don’t make the UX suck ass, is what I’m saying

i agree w/ that fully - i think i wrote about this a bit, where nostr and atproto basically start from the same place but then when making compromises nostr chooses purity and atproto chooses good ux

Ah, but anticlimactic bsky-sans-bsky is precisely what I hope for 😉 Srsly, I dream of the day when all sorts of communities set up shop on ATproto, with users empowered to connect (or not!) with whomever they want, anywhere they want, all without any direct involvement from Bluesky Social, PBC.

One great thing Mastodon has that Bsky (currently) lacks is a broad and varied network with all kinds of servers/communities centered around all kinds of interests. The problem with Masto’s approach is that server admins decide who their own users can or can’t connect with, leading to fragmentation.

Having communities set up their own non-Bsky servers, and composable moderation giving users the ability to connect with whomever they want without server admin restrictions, is the real decentralized-social-media dream for me. Seeing steps taken towards that is heartening.

Lack of portability made mastodon bad to me. I made an acct with a server to test it out, then opted to self host (custom domain) and was annoyed that I lost my posts. Then when maintaining my self hosted server became annoying (running out of disk, security updates) I abandoned Mastodon entirely

Feel like I lack context. I first thought about how difficult it has been to adopt fediverse (mastodon), which I think is mainly a UX/UI issue. AP/bsky has had the advantage of a more familiar experience. I would love to see some deeper AP/fediverse integration (the bridge works but meh)
