I read a tweet before seeing it praising that, and I think it set my expectations appropriately. the fuzzy and ambiguous political/historical backdrop I think disappointed some people? but it was strongly to the story's benefit

Garland film == as a director? Or as a writer? Because as a writer/screenwriter: “Never Let Me Go” is way up there.

NOT GREAT, BOB
ex machina is a truly brilliant piece of writing and will always have my top spot, but civil war was fucking amazing

Jesse Plemmons was so great. The background context didn’t matter and people lost sight in that nuance.

100%. the thematic point was that it framed an American civil war the exact same way American movies frame other countries’ wars — haphazardly mowing over all the details and context, merely using “their war” to tell some other random story. Americans hated being on the receiving end of that lol

“but who was on which side? how cowardly is it to not take a political stance?!? ugh” riiiiight. how many American war movies have been made about the middle east without bothering to understand the difference between sunni and shi’a? that’s the whole point! brilliant film.

Liked the movie, too. It’s a tense ride. But I hate that he chooses to ignore the cause. That part feels too much like a cop out—especially in light of our current situation. Feels like a well made toothless experience. But I’m always glad to see views of folk who liked it for what’s missing.
