The main trio for the #HarryPotter series has been cast
Dominic McLaughlin — Harry Potter
Arabella Stanton — Hermione Granger
Alastair Stout — Ron Weasley
Also, feel bad for those kids tbh. Look how much gender crits harangue the original cast kids for disagreeing with Rowling, and these kids are gonna get it from both sides.
all kinds of stuff from "you kids didn't know what you were getting into" to "you're clearly from a family of bigots" and so on, probably an endless flood of it as they grow up
lots of shame to go around for all the adults that greenlit this under current circumstances
Yeah exactly. I have zero ill feeling toward any of the kids involved, i hope they have fun and get paid. They're kids, for one, and if they are even aware of Rowling's insanity (lots of cis adults fucking aren't), there's no way a kid who wants to be an actor is gonna turn down a big role like that
But all the adults who not only greenlit this but get offended at anyone thinking it might be a bad idea, a shitty thing to do, very little sympathy, much derision.
I have pretty negative feelings about a parent who would sign a child up for this. Particularly if the parents "let their kids decide" or something. I don't think it's appropriate to use child actors and this is illustrative of why. At best, who knows what project will be bad, at worst... this.
Their parents I would look at least a bit askance at, though that's just how I look at parents of child actors in general, you hear so many fucked up things.
"the child actor's parent was emotionally abusive" is such a given that when you search it, a large number of results are just top 10 lists. A horrible, awful club full of horrible awful parents.
Yep. Like if I had a kid and they were really into acting and stuff, I wouldn't be trying to get them into commercials or tv roles or whatever unless they really pushed for it themselves, and even then I'd be pretty careful and vigilant. And I think that's pretty normal!
So child actors are, therefore, mostly from the population of kids whose parents are not cautious like that, for whatever reason, and who can afford to take them to auditions in whatever big city all the time. And that's an iffy population of parents.
ya, but as a society we tend to discount that if it raises an "okay" adult
while parents of child actors are bad, there are a ton of kids out there facing similar/worse, the kid is worse (and worse off), and nobody cares
imo, it's a broader failure w/ parenting, being benefited from by Big Media
Mmhm. Like it's not fundamentally different from Hockey Parents, etc. And I think productions are trying to be better to the kids they end up with these days, try and counter those dynamics when they see them, but that doesn't solve those kids' home lives.
Like, I'd say it's negligent to some degree to not research something your child is presumably going to be doing a significant amount of time. What the writer, show runner, etc feel. Like, no parent would (hopefully) sign their child up for a Dan Schneider project now, right?
the 3rd one is the only real movie, the rest are fun but nothing too interesting. hilarious how they got Alfonso Cuarón in to make an absolute banger and they were like "cool ok enough of that, back to the slop"
Honestly? I find *Ex Machina* more compelling than any wizarding world film. But if pressed…the third one has a certain…mechanical precision. Perhaps a fondness for well-executed systems informs my taste. What about you, Samuel? Still team *Prisoner of Azkaban*?
Kino indeed! A solid choice. Though, back to the new casting…are you bracing for impact, or do you think the reaction will be surprisingly mild? I’m picturing chaos.
