I don't think most of us fully understand what was lost when Twitter was taken over and effectively ruined. I spent fourteen years on the platform (2008 - 2022), and after leaving during the takeover, I realized the kind of interconnectedness we had through it was unique--even for online social spaces. We had access to near-real-time, first-person source data from hundreds of millions of users all over the world, none of it paywalled or divided into disparate walled gardens. Looking back, it's mind-boggling now to think how all that knowledge-rich data was just...right there. Ripe, not for the taking, but for the collective understanding.

I believe Bluesky Social has a unique opportunity to re-capture this lost inter-connectedness of real-time data, purposing it for the good of its users, and I believe my experience developing user-focused applications and my passion for working with data and finding the deep knowledge buried within seemingly random or incoherent information, will be perfect to help Bluesky take advantage of the opportunity that current Twitter leadership has seemingly squandered.

I've been a user on Bluesky Social for over two years now (since April 2023)--not just as a user, but also as a developer. Well before the platform had built-in trending functionality, I created the "Now Breezing" bot account (@nowbreezing.ntw.app, May 2023), designed to read the Bluesky Firehose/Jetstream and report the most-used (adjusted for past usage) words/emojis/hashtags on the site every ten minutes. But that's only the beginning; using specialized graph databases and algorithms, I plan to enable it to identify much more insightful changes in collective user activity, more fully and thoroughly utilizing that "near-real-time, first-person source data", to decide when "something important is happening", as it's happening, and report on it (in a very basic manner--e.g. "X is now Y"), hopefully faster than even news organizations can "get the word out" (assuming they find it profitable to do so in the first place). However, with rapidly-advancing generative AI and the social media accounts that do and will utilize it to pretend to be regular users and ordinary people (and not to mention with the still-ongoing politically- and profit-motivated mis- and dis-information pandemic), this kind of reporting of "what's happening now" may soon become impractical or impossible, and I believe Bluesky Social has a unique position to help avoid this increasingly likely "Dead Internet Theory"-esque future.

[this line only partially visible] Internet Theory"-esque future.

Finally, I have a deep belief that my work, leveraging my skills and abilities, should be to develop technology that benefits everyone, not just myself or a select few, and certainly not at the expense of everyone or anyone else. Bluesky Social's mission to benefit individual users matches that perfectly; it's one of the only well-known companies I'm aware of (other than, what, Costco? The Wikimedia Foundation and The Internet Archive?) that I believe is focused on benefiting individual people more than just its own bottom line. Its AT protocol, enabling users to control their own social media accounts and data truly independently from any one company, is one of those ideas that is so obviously true in retrospect that it's hard to believe everyone didn't think of it. The concept of email is a direct analogue--there are no "walled gardens" of email address spaces where you can only message someone else within your garden. Email addresses, contact lists, and message history are independent from any one company's control (or even collective control), so why not social media handles, follows/followings, and post history? This is also true with hosting your own website; the Internet was clearly made as a collective good, and yet we now see companies shamelessly privatizing as much as they can to limit access for no other end than to increase their own bottom line. Instead, I believe Bluesky can bring us closer to that "collective good" vision for the Internet.

In summary, I believe my experience and passion with data and user-focused applications, my close proximity to the Bluesky Social application and its history, and my convictions regarding human-focused development of technology solely for collective good, make me the perfect candidate to help leverage Bluesky Social's unique circumstances for healthy and meaningful user growth, company potential, and increased good for everyone who chooses to use the platform/the AT protocol. I look forward to hearing if you will let me help Bluesky Social to unlock the potential the platform has in this unique time in Internet history.
