good news: massive perf win found bad news: it was my code that made it slow in the first place

We have a concept we borrowed from the workplace of one of our early volunteers: the commit-and-ditch pony. It is held by the most recent senior person who should goddamn know better (so we're not picking on new devs) who authored a most egregious commit AND the person who reviewed the commit.

(The original was a physical object that moved from desk to desk, but as we are a remote operation, ours is virtual.) importantly, holding the pony is cause for gentle teasing, not bullying! We use it to show new contributors that senior people fuck up too, to fight impostor syndrome.

Nine times out of ten, it's either the person who wrote the code or the reviewer who sighs and says "shit, we get the pony for that." I hereby award you and the reviewer one (1) pony until someone else claims it from you!

Embarrassing news: the code was a 'sleep(1000)' I put in for testing and forgot about

You're not alone. I remember times it felt like half my work effort was fixing problems I had inadvertently caused. Tell yourself it's imposter syndrome and carry on.
