I have yet to see a chat interface on iOS meet the quality bar set by the Messages app - interactive dismiss - keyboard gesture that starts when your finger touches the search input - uses content inset so you can see the keyboard blur effect

I was going to say “in react native” but actually nobody has done it! even the good ones like whatsapp don’t do the content inset part

the problem with react native in particular is that the flatlist `inverted` prop sucks and is basically unusable if you want your list to be accessible. so we end up relying on some pretty hacky behaviour to keep it scrolled to the bottom would love to revisit (maybe when we do groups???)

fr though we have such specific requirements from the chat scrollview I will take a serious look at legendlist once we migrate to new arch

I'm actually working on making a perfect chat UI right now. The answer to the list is Legend List of course 😅. But there's a lot more on top to get everything perfect. We'll hopefully have something to show soon! @samuel.bsky.team Ping me when you're ready and I'll try to help 👍

for a while in SwiftUI it was only possible to do this with a flipped scrollview. they added some new stuff like a scroll position anchor thing but i haven’t messed around with it too much. but idk why it’s so difficult. I wish i understood UIKit better

You’d probably use a flipped scroll view in UIKit too haha. I’ve heard makes it easier to stay scrolled to the bottom of the list and leaves out some jank to make that happen SwiftUI’s focus api just isn’t flexible enough or expressive enough to do anything as smooth as that tho

It’s annoying that when I search for two words on here within quotation marks, bluesky still searches each word separately. Can you change that ?

I think I can fix this! I think the problem is phone keyboards produce “ but the search system is expecting " will fix!

I always forget about telegram lol yeah it’s the only one that gets full marks

heh sure. here’s a comparison of Discord and Messages. when I start swiping on Discord, the keyboard closes instantly, but on messages the keyboard only starts closing when my fingers hits the keyboard and then tracks with the gesture

Slightly related in that it's also iOS related: are y'all tracking the bug where when you're writing a post and switch apps, when you come back all the text is (sometimes) invisible , or should I put some efforts into figuring out a repro case?

(It started when I upgraded to 1.103, but actually now that I think about it, I haven't upgraded since, I should do so and see if it's fixed. And I am running a much older iOS, so that could also be a factor!)

sweet, thank you for time traveling to have already fixed the bug I was reporting 🫡 (I need to update more often but I HATE Things Changing)

It's actually a thing I've found a lot of T&S people develop over time because our pattern matching brains get so good at yelling at us about stuff being irregular or outside the norm that Things Changing visually puts us on constant low-grade alert and it's exhausting, heh

I can try and take one here in a bit; what occurs, when it triggers, is I'll be writing a post, I'll switch apps, and when I switch back, the input field in the post editor will be invisible. I've also experienced this bug with threaded replies at random whilst typing.

Telegram goes above and beyond in some areas and then drops the balls in others, it's a very strange app lol

Aw are you telling me you don't want to read about the CEO of your chat app being arrested in France randomly? (or then pivoting to a Grok AI deal... that never existed i guess?) Telegram is an extremely strange platform.

- uses content inset so you can see the keyboard blur effect WhatsApp does seem to do that for me, same as Messages. I can see the green/grey bubbles scrolling through the blurred keyboard, and even pops of yellow where there are emoji. (WA 2.25.22.73, iOS 18.6.1, no custom chat backgrounds).

hmmmmmmm so it does. I wonder if that changed because I did a review of all the big chat apps a year ago and I’m pretty sure it was missing one of the things. maybe I’m misremembering

Me too, I use iMessage with a few friends though and while the experience is very polished the backend is abysmal :-/ Attaching a photo takes roughly 2s between tapping the photo and seeing it appear in the message composer, it’s nuts
