city of london is the best skyscraper district on earth because seemingly the only planning rule they have is “you can build whatever you want so long as it looks stupid and different to everything else”. it works so well!

“hello we want to build a skyscraper” “is it stupid?” “uhhh there’s a public park on the roof and it has a giant lens that melts cars on the street” “approved!”

Chinese cities a close second because clearly they have a directive to subsidise the LED lights industry

"just as long as it doesn't block the view of the south side of the cairn hill from where the westmost window of the old abby used to be before the norman invasion all looks good to me"

the only regret i have about not having gotten an offer in the UK is that i don't get to work in one of those stupid skyscrapers

The actual reason, which is also a bit zany, is there are multiple "protected views" of St Paul's cathedral, and new skyscrapers have to get out of the way of those views. So you get weird bent buildings literally leaning out of the way so as to not spoil somebody's insta

yep I mean that’s why the cheesegrater looks like that, but there is also a generally tendency to make them all a bit insane looking. I mean look at the Lloyd’s building

I always kinda liked the Lloyds building. But then it was there way before any of the other insanity so it stood out in kind of a good way.

Agree. Also love the way you get architecture from the 1st, 17th, 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st centuries just all jumbled up.
Close crop of a City of London street scene with buildings from 2, maybe 3 different centuries. 3

The other planning rule is surely “don’t touch the tiny old pub down the alleyway”, which I do like.
