"I want to discover new posts but I want them in chronological order" why is this such a common ask because it makes no sense

probably so that if you see something you’ve already seen / liked, you know that you’ve been here before and don’t have to go further back in case you’ve missed something?

@samuel.fm
makes sense but why do the posts have to be in chronological order

because if they’re not, how do I know that I have seen all posts? Say I see all the posts as of right now, then come back one hour later. Now I want to read everything “since the last time”. Now I just read until I see I post I’ve already seen. This only works when chronologically ordered, right?

but what does it mean to “see all posts” if it’s an algorithmic feed? we can keep showing you relevant posts near-indefinitely. chronological only makes sense with a limited set of posts, such as “all posts from people you follow”. “any possibly-relevant post” is unlimited

yep and thats “Following” and it’s chronological. I think we’re getting wires crossed - I’m talking about people asking for it to be an algorithmic discovery feed *and also* chronological like this poor redditor

I have both the "Following" and "Latest from Follows" feeds, and they are not the same. It seems to me that only the latter is chronological. Right now the top post on Following for me is from 5h ago, while Latest from Follows is 24m ago

This is great, but what I want is the Discovery feed in chronological form. I am, apparently, weird for wanting this.

But I want to see more than just the people I follow. Why are you so determined to not accept that some of us prefer chronological order for all social media?

So you want every single post from the website in order? I’m confused. That would be insane. There’s way too many people posting at once all the time for that to be possible, I think.

Computers measure time in microseconds. I'm pretty sure the bright folks involved in programming social media sites could figure it out. But yes. I want all the posts in chronological order.

There are certainly some accounts I'd block from that feed (this account is for NO politics at all), but that's not awful.

Obvs, I can't keep up with The Firehose ( @samuel.fm post a link to that, which I actually love watching!). But I do think that insisting on a top-down forced list of Who You/Everyone Get To See has... inherent issues. OBVIOUS inherent issues.

its a pretty simple ask. just curate x number of relevant posts per hour and mix them into my normal chronological feed of ppl i follow. the most important part is that i want to hit the bottom of the feed so i know when to stop scrolling, but i also want to see content from people i dont follow.

Or, better phrased: It doesn’t work if something I’ve already seen gets pushed up because it’s popular / has new comments etc
