much like Napoleon abolished serfdom, I will abolish JPG/PNG and replace them with WebP
5 1 44boss: we need to add error logging
me (thinking about Seeing Like a State) okay mr High Modernist, let’s go increase the legibility of our Subjects
1 16I have no idea what this all means
Meh, let's skip it and go straight to JPEG XL
3 10May I suggest AVIF then? (should be superior to WebP on all points now that it is supported everywhere?)
1 1maybe one day but not today, it’s super expensive to encode and we don’t want to make the image reprocessing server explode
2 3But doesn’t Bluesky already reprocess to avif? If I append `@avif` to an image URL from the Bluesky CDN I get an avif version of that image.
1 4we do, we are just using ImgProxy. we just have server load considerations
imgproxy: fast and secure on-the-fly image processing
imgproxy is a fast and secure standalone server for resizing and converting remote images. The guiding principles behind imgproxy are security, speed, and simplicity
imgproxy.net
Holy crap, I was expecting this to be far more limited.
I could tell @bmp worked correctly as soon as I saw the image loading from the bottom.
1Okay then; can't wait for JXL to be available everywhere, it would be as good as AVIF while being wayyyy less demanding on the encoder side! (Could be even less demanding than WebP, so it would save you compute too…)
I'll ping you about that next year 💛
3what are your designs for the venerable GIF
2 1gifs are a social construct
im quite fond of looping WEBMs in theory but i havent thought about this problem much tbh
1 1social construct support when
1 2mmmm it’s mostly down to fitting it into our existing video pipeline (moderating multiple frames etc) - in a perfect world webms would probably work better
1 1yea makes sense
1also tyfys
1If it's like Napoléon and serfdom, we might end up with BMP 😅
