At high school I had to learn assembly, and sometimes my code wouldn’t work because of whatever values happened to be in the registers. So instead of debugging it, I’d sometimes just move to another computer.
You've gotta come at the whole situation holistically: taking into account the token cost and time to fix the issue
But also the psychic damage taken by the dev team and the potential health costs
I have definitely contemplated asking a user if I can just send them one of my old laptops to replace the computer they're running because they're the only person who has that setup and the display bug only happens in that browser/OS combo, heh
I once met a guy whose job it was to do apps for a brokerage type firm. They had apps for all the major platforms, but these were super high net worth clients so if they were on some obscure blackberry or whatever he would have to support it.
He said his very first step would be to buy the highest end of the latest iPhone, gift wrap it, and see whether or not he could get the client to bite. If so, they saved tens of thousands of dollars
