Every social app has these trending widgets, there’s better uses for a widget I think. What about a list of notifications, or (gasp) posts. Have it show a post or two from a feed of the user’s choice and change it whenever ios lets you refresh.

ios is super stingy about letting you refresh, so it's really not a good fit for anything even approaching real-time content

Hmm, I was more focused on the second idea than the first. That doesn’t need to be realtime, just samples from the feed

Yeah, this sounds way better than a trending widget, a month ago I played around and made these for android, almost everything is functional
