Hmm community handles is actually a little more expensive to host than I thought, especially if it gets popular. Any ideas how much is reasonable to charge? I went with £10/year initially but I’m thinking maybe a smaller amount but monthly? Bare in mind, I just want the cost to cover Vercel Pro

Maybe £5/mo? Then I’d need 4 customers to cover Vercel costs and above that would go to pay back domain costs

(My thinking behind £10/year was just basically a one time payment for me to set it up. Seems now though that there will be operating expenses so that model might not work so well)

Yeah - basically just traffic. Vercel’s storage is expensive, I guess I could migrate the data but that would be difficult and I don’t want to

5768 KV requests - yeah I am. Probably misusing Redis, I will need to refactor to use postgres instead

Vercel's free tier is 30000 KV requests/month, which I will probably reach if this keeps up

Feel like it shouldn’t be hard to get four customers especially if bluesky keeps growing. Definitely wouldn’t invest time in reducing costs at this point.

but it doesn’t feel like it should be a very expensive app to run. either it’s doing more than i think or vercel has a stingy free tier

Vercel storage is wildly overpriced. I’d move it but I don’t know how to transfer redis databases You know what, I’m gonna move it. It really should be basically free

Omg didn’t read your bio 😂 I regret being so blunt, so sorry I’ve used firebase rtdb in the past and while it was nice to work with when it worked, I found the docs really hard to navigate. I also ended up missing the type safety you get from something like Prisma (idk if firestore is different?)

Also, it was a bit of a pain writing react bindings for it. It’d be great to see an official package for that, I’d probably be much more inclined to use it if that was the case

Don’t worry, I can handle blunt 😂 If you want to work with native types in Firestore, check out the FirestoreDataConverter interface. If you want react bindings, check out ReactFire. If you want to host react or next, check out our new “web frameworks” experiment in hosting.

Great, thank you so much! I haven’t checked out firebase in such a long time, so thanks for these resources - I’ll give it a try for my next project
