quoting this for broader reach - what should DMs default to? 1. off 2. follows only 3. all

We've been discussing this and I don't want to talk out of turn, but of the 3 options do folks generally feel that would be the best default?

you'd be able to set it to any of these three ofc, I'm just curious about what the initial setting should be

1. Off by default would be best for safety. 2. Follows only by default would be okay for me personally - used to that from Twitter. 3. All by default is absolutely unacceptable. Thanks for asking!

Ideal would be a prompt when the feature comes out so I can decide rather than get a default

Samuel
I could maybe see us doing a prompt when you open the app for the first time since the update or something like that

Off topic. About buggy. The scrolling on profiles (but not on feeds or search) on web has been totally erratic for a few weeks. Is it only me?

thanks, looks like we consistently get reports about this with older Chromium versions so we probably have enough to investigate this now

This is the way. No matter the default, we’d immediately have the power to set what *we* want. Then it’s no one’s fault but our own what we have.

Barry Dorrans
Given they're plain text apparently I'd say off by default, with a confirmation/warning about the lack of encryption once you select either of the other options.

Charles Johnson
1. off With a prompt the first time someone loads the updated app, to let them opt in or bail out right away.

Gwen McNamara
OFF by default…not even friends! You should NEVER turn on a new feature with any level of automatically being opted in. If they want friends to DM them, they can go turn that on…otherwise it’s open season until people can change their settings/follows.

1 default Turning it on sets it to 2 If anybody needs to DM that's not a follow they'll just ask on the replies, no different than when companies did it for PR/Sweepstakes.

2 makes sense to me I guess, though I never had a problem with DM spam personally, so probably for some people 1 will make more sense, but dunno (3 obv. not)

Mike Babulic
2. Follows only would be the best default I’d also like to see a blacklist/whitelist option. There are situations where you follow someone who you don’t want in your DM’s
3
Kate Armstrong
The one on ‘The Other Place’ that was the safest for me was DMs only from followers that I also follow.

Follows only. It best balances the harassment risk of people being weird in the DMs against the risks of having conversations in public that are better off private

Annalee
Worth noting on harassment/safety: Reducing the friction of taking conversations private is a safety feature as much as/more than it is a risk. A lot of us shed personal info like skin flakes on social media, which isn't a problem until it is, and then it's too late.

And here's one that Twitter didn't have: for folks with open DMs, an option to hide/blur media sent via DM from folks they don't follow Open DMs are valuable for reporters and businesses, and (especially for women) putting up with sexual harassment via explicit images is a cost of doing their job

Just throwing user stories at you now: DM allowlist in place of or in addition to allowing from all followers. The tension between setting customizability and intelligibility makes this tricky but it would facilitate one-off conversations (such as customer support) without requiring a follow

It's worked great for image labels. The added friction makes abuse harder without meaningully impacting people.

I feel like 2 is probably the answer. Since my follower count is low I don't have much of a preference.

Follows only is fair, I think. Off or On are entirely too black and white for default, but having it only be follows works for people who just want to talk to their friends. Y'know- the average user.

2. I reckon defaulting to followers only is most in line with the BlueSky vibe?
1
Metaflame
Default will apply to most, so Follows Only seems like the best option. Doesn't expose people to too much unintended spam potentially, but doesn't leave DMs disabled for most of the user base who don't change the setting.

1. Anything else is gonna lead to a lot of spam. Also I don’t need ore want another inbox to be checking for people trying to reach me
1
John R Smith Jnr
Default should be Off. Opting in makes it the user’s choice to open their privacy. Which makes for a far better experience.

1. off Free and open messaging already exists, so opening DMs at your own discretion is a better balance.
1
Kufat
2, but also nag people a bit to decide starting a few weeks before DMs go live

Whatever the cohort of users who might actually use dms want. I only really hear big accounts talk about wanting them so maybe it’s them. Big accounts seem To have have very different needs than most users. I will probably never use dms. I don’t need block or mute, but big accounts love it.

They’ll change it if they don’t like it, it’s nice for people to be able to contact people they normally can’t.
1
misha fletcher
Follows only, but with some kind of push/popup notification when the feature goes live so that people can disable it immediately if they wish to do so.
3
Yasmine Galenorn
Follows Only, unless the user checks "open to all"...Randos sliding into DMs are a serious issue on other social media sites.

Definitely not all. If one wants to take the risks of opening up DMs from strangers that's their decision to make and should not be made ootb. Only from who *you* follow seems fine. This choice probably needs review from safety experts. We should very much protect users from harassment by default.
Ves
Defaulting to the safest setting for new users would be the best choice to help prevent abuse, and so I would say off.
