I find the Dorsey interview fascinating because his issue with Bluesky seems to be mostly vibes-based. He wants ultra-pro-free-speech vibes, and thought a protocol-based app would produce that, whereas we've ended up in a situation where borderline unmoderated X is actually the place he wants to be

Bluesky - well more specifically atproto - *is* everything he wanted, but to him the vibes are off. So back to X he goes

Like really though, the man so badly misunderstands the audience for "Twitter-like platforms that are not themselves Twitter" it's almost a little comical.

In his defense (I will not, in fact, defend him), he was a truly awful CEO when he led Twitter. He had no vision, very little involvement, and the product stagnated for years. His recent slew of nonsense perfectly fits with his track record.

and i think that’s fine. he’s off with those who think like he does, and we’re here with those we prefer. win-win. i’m glad jack involved himself in starting bluesky and i’m glad he’s moved on now. 🎊

His vibes are Musky. Words shouldn’t have consequences, unless he doesn’t like it.

whoa whoa whoa I will not stand for this NOSTR erasure because I want to make sure people remember it exists. to laugh at it.

Which didn't exist even then. Maybe things were somewhat more lax and I just happened to be in a good community so we didn't have a lot of bad apples, but moderation was absolutely a thing then.

normie online communities definitely used to have more moderation than they do today. things shifted post-facebook when moderation became too hard to scale to large platforms

Mike Merritt
I helped run this community, which was quite large for its time. No Twitter, but enough activity where a solid set of moderation policies were needed.

Ha, not SA big, either, I think. I admined on Invisionize, one of the modding communities for Invision Board, if anyone remembers that software.

From reading the interview it seems like he’s hung up on a couple things. - Mandatory BS mod layer - BS solely owns centralized identities - BS as a company I think when atproto is submitted to the standards body 3 will be solved, and more services build on BS will solve 1. I think 2 is a good point

why on earth would anybody need to “solve” #1 here? is it really just dumb libertarian fetishism all the way down? having a mod layer is scary; it means making concrete decisions. it’s also obviously necessary to anyone with a brain

I think it’s part being able to survive without the company and part just having the choice. They go really far with composable moderation, I could see an argument where they make the base moderation a modular part like the rest of it, but I also see an argument for how it is now 🤷🏻‍♂️

I think you’re seeing it as much more complex than Jack does. He seems to object to moderation as an idea, in principle. Which is insane, shortsighted & plain stupid. The man’s a VC idiot & does not know what he’s talking about; the fact that he’s parroting Muskian talking points demonstrates that.

(And the idea that moderation is a “mistake” that Twitter made - what in hell causes a person to think such nonsense? Certainly everything Musk has done makes it clear that moderation was a good thing; and Twitter actually needed more of it.)

Jeff Johnston
On a more complex level: it seems clear that the people who work on BS absolutely do not believe that more built services will make the mandatory mod layer obsolete. Online space must be moderated; the BS team has said so from the start.

Did you read the interview? He's saying right there he never left twitter, but started twitting more recently. Calling other dumbass when you can't barely read is a bold move.
