once you get quote dunked 500 times in the row you’ll understand why we added this feature

Good point. And yet you are the advocate of super smooth UI's, engineering it to the last pixel, making the perfect round corners ;-)

But on the other hand I think I kinda like the idea, because if someone locks quotes, that means they probably would have blocked you anyway if you quoted them, so this way you know that you have to use a link or screenshot instead and stay unblocked 😎

That actually happens a lot. On Twitter I often saw people quote screenshot post. Now we also have the cross quote screenshot post.

All privacy features feel like this with the firehose next door and all data being public. Still I think that these are good features that help ordinary people that are not nerdy bastards.

we've seen it be effective all over though - on Twitter block-evading was/is super easy, but removing 'just click here to harass' is a *huge* impediment this isn't infosec, this is culture and affordance

Reply gating kinda makes sense, because it feels like when someone posts and there's a thread of comments below, they're still kind of the "owner" on the thread, you're in their place. But quote gating means they control what other places referencing it you can create.

once you get enough followers you don't "own" a thread sorry its the price of clout yelling about "my mentions" is being angry that someone else is standing in the park listening to you opinions and responding if you don't want people to respond then shut up with your stupid opinion

sure but when people aren't harassing them and they act like its an offense to say anything at unless pre-approved its just kinda contradictory to the point of public discourse networks if you post about the music you are listening to don't be angry when people talk about music in the thread

Yeah. it'll be very interesting to see how it works out. It introduces enough friction that it will probablyl have some impact but very hard to predict how much. We shall see.

In the end this is a human problem, a problem of lack of respect, a problem of accepting that not everyone is like you. There is no technology solution for that. Dreaming that one day we all will be better humans.

Agreed that there's an underlying human problem, but specific choice of technology affordances can easily make things worse -- or (potentially) better.

goeo like the
hopefully this means you just won’t be pinged anymore? if the app view refuses to display the post that is a quote to people following the post author that’s extremely lame

It’s not magical, people can always screencap or whatever. It just lets you escape unwanted attention if someone is quote dunking you and you wanna unassociate with the post

soap 😁
also i think this might cause more harm than good if i want to say something mean in a quote i'll just start screenshotting and then there's no friction at all compared to the current block system

i’m guessing similar to a reply-gate (e.g. choose who’s allowed to reply/quote this post)

Okay, but where are the italics? We need to be able to emphasize words without shouting them in all caps. Italics, please. 🙏

Sure microblogging can cause heated arguments sometimes, but I certainly hope this place doesn't turn into a mastodon-esque "everything is toxic" hyperfragility culture.
