pro-toxicity features, interesting
3 1 15Friction is the point
2 1 22Good point. And yet you are the advocate of super smooth UI's, engineering it to the last pixel, making the perfect round corners ;-)
1But on the other hand I think I kinda like the idea, because if someone locks quotes, that means they probably would have blocked you anyway if you quoted them, so this way you know that you have to use a link or screenshot instead and stay unblocked π
1 6That actually happens a lot. On Twitter I often saw people quote screenshot post. Now we also have the cross quote screenshot post.
1On twitter we've always believed not to give eyeballs to idiots, so screengrabs are the best way to go about.
1 2Just quote and hit the idiot on the head. π
1 1π€£
(But why give the idiots eyeballs?)
Bigger bonk with screengrabbing π
2All privacy features feel like this with the firehose next door and all data being public.
Still I think that these are good features that help ordinary people that are not nerdy bastards.
2 5we've seen it be effective all over though - on Twitter block-evading was/is super easy, but removing 'just click here to harass' is a *huge* impediment
this isn't infosec, this is culture and affordance
1 16True. And that's why these are good features.
6Reply gating kinda makes sense, because it feels like when someone posts and there's a thread of comments below, they're still kind of the "owner" on the thread, you're in their place. But quote gating means they control what other places referencing it you can create.
1 5once you get enough followers you don't "own" a thread
sorry its the price of clout
yelling about "my mentions" is being angry that someone else is standing in the park listening to you opinions and responding
if you don't want people to respond then shut up with your stupid opinion
2 5No, this is an extremely common take but it's pure toxicity, fuck that. Having a bunch of followers doesn't somehow magically strip someone of their humanity and make it okay to harass them.
1 9sure but when people aren't harassing them and they act like its an offense to say anything at unless pre-approved its just kinda contradictory to the point of public discourse networks
if you post about the music you are listening to don't be angry when people talk about music in the thread
1 1Yeah. it'll be very interesting to see how it works out. It introduces enough friction that it will probablyl have some impact but very hard to predict how much. We shall see.
1In the end this is a human problem, a problem of lack of respect, a problem of accepting that not everyone is like you. There is no technology solution for that.
Dreaming that one day we all will be better humans.
1 1Agreed that there's an underlying human problem, but specific choice of technology affordances can easily make things worse -- or (potentially) better.
1 1True. I am happy to see the bluesky peeps address these issues.
1Luckily we have xblock to fight screenshot posts.
