The same reason we leave mail in a trashcan on the street, we used to live in a civilized society where people respected the law and didn’t break into or destroy federal property.
We absolutely did not ever live in a civilized society and we have been evil genocidal freaks who have brought immeasurable suffering and horror to the world for the last four hundred years. This is just a small spat between the whites. Unless you're in the UK then change 400 to like a thousand
yes. I mean in previous elections there's been insane queues etc in some places so it can be quite a time-consuming activity to vote in person that is legitimately impossible for people who have to work
In the last election here, people in one neighborhood waited until 2-3am in a queue to vote, even though voting hours technically ended at 9pm (but you could vote if you were in the queue by then) 😅
With eletronic voting machines I've never ever had to wait more than 5 minutes to vote. In the election this last Sunday I arrived, they checked my document, took a biometric fingerprint, I voted, and I left the room in less than 2 min.
This is why all these fascist leaders want to make life easy and get rid of democracy and just take over... No one needs to worry about skipping or missing work.
Yeah that's something that'd be a good idea but apparently too controversial. Though technically, businesses are supposed to give everyone time off to vote.
Doesn't mean you get paid for it though.
I was down in Colombia last week and talked about this with folks from both Colombia and Brazil describing their voting procedures and both were surprised at how bad ours are in the US.
People who stand in line to vote don't know what they're missing. It's so nice to be able to research and fill out your ballot at your leisure. If you want to do it in person, you just go to an elections office, no line.
But as an OR voter I'm going to put my ballot in a library ballot bin.
That's one of the reasons, compulsory voting was written in the Constitution in Belgium (and that we vote on Sunday), to put pressure on employers (among others) to let their employee go to vote because not letting them would be blocking a legal obligation.
Yeah but votes are like *way* more important… and important letters are also (here at least) sent from a post office with a confirmation from the post office emplyee
Here (Austria) ballots are usually submitted through regular mail drop boxes, and there's never been a major issue with that … (I do prefer to collect and submit mine directly at the district office though, which is also an option)
USPS is a federal agency here, has its own law enforcement arm (US Postal Inspection service). Tampering with the US mail is a Federal offense, min. 5 years in Fed prison.
You can ask for confirmation if you want it too, but its a voluntary process, not mandatory.
We dropped ours off at the box when we went to the post office to apply for the kids' passports last week. I got a text from our Secretary of State's office later that afternoon confirming it was received and already counted. It was great
Yup they’ve been out there in the rain for like two weeks. Thing is built like a tank though, like 1/3inch welded steel plates with the tiniest little slit that could only fit the standard ballot envelope.
The come and pick them up with a fork lift and put them on a flatbed because they’re so heavy
Just across state lines in WA someone burned a ballot box with some kind of “device” so I assume boxes there must have a bigger opening.
You could probably poor gas and drop a match into our OR boxes but you’re not getting any device in there.
The device was on the outside. And they have anti-incendiary measures (which is why the one in Oregon didn't have to replace any ballots), it's just that the Vancouver one didn't work well.
They’re not bad, actually; and you can submit the ballot in one of the ballot drop boxes or in a regular post box
There are folks registering voters in close proximity to the boxes too… so someone’s watching them
There was a Mail theft this week, however… from a Mail truck 🤬
The drop box where I used to work had to be monitored constantly until someone from the county came by to pick it up
I send my ballots by mail all the time though and I get a text message when it's received and my signature is verified
It's like price segmentation but for voting. You know how many goods have an expensive plus version that's slightly better than the regular one but in practice about the same? Voters have a range of options from least secure (but easy) to more secure (but requires waiting).
Which maybe sounds nuts but makes sense if you try to optimize for getting more people to vote (Americans have comparatively low turnout) over avoiding fraud (historically quite rare).
The comparison illustrates an ignorance of the realities of election drop boxes.
The ones I have encountered and used are built like a bullet-proof armored truck and kept locked.
They more resemble the night depository of a bank than a trashcan.
But go on, keep undermining faith in the system.
Theyre so convenient, especially for disabled folks, and very monitored in most places. We can also mail them directly in our state, but then you run into mail delay issues.
The one I use is the size of a small SUV, is bolted into place and surrounded by bollards, and is situated next to the local police precinct and almost certainly video-monitored.
I wouldn't use a postal box, that seems like it has a lot of ways to be mishandled
Also where I live, I get my ballot in my mailbox and there are ways to check its status; if I didn't receive it I could have invalidated it and got a new one- and once put in the drop box I can see if it's been received and accepted- if it wasn't accepted by now I could fix that
Only ever voted early and only ever by drop boxes. Maybe one time by normal mailbox. At least in our state they make tracking it very easy.
When the people in power want people to vote it makes things better.
And I guess voting in person sounds nice for the community aspect of it, but we live in a country where you could get shot attending a concert or going to school so at least vote early I don’t see the reason to wait.
It sounds like it works the same way in the UK though, is a postbox not a trashcan on the street? 🙂
“Voters return their postal ballots together with postal voting statements filled in with their date of birth and signature either by post or by hand”
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Absente...
I wouldn't call them a trash can, but it is pretty crazy that we're able to do this.
Mail-in ballots and their drop boxes are so incredibly convenient!
I live in a vote by mail (or drop box) state and have voted in person when I needed a ballot replacement. I was also able to go by at any point when the office was open, and there was no line because everyone else was voting remotely. It was so much easier than when I voted in person (in 2000 😭)
I already got in trouble for disparaging mail-in/dropbox voters, but this feels like a safer space…
Vote in person, you cowards!
*unless you have a good excuse
