hmm, I don’t love the home button having an unclearable dot if you use Discover as your main feed… maybe that needs some thought
1 27ok here’s my solution for what to do about the FAB:
1. only get rid of the button in the root screens - home+your profile
2. only show the dot on the home tab if you’re currently on the home tab
3. make the FAB smaller and less extremely ugly on the rest of the screens
4 11nooooooooo
1 7make the fab smaller and remove the icon yes. but don’t get rid of the fab.
on android it’s the only way to scroll to top. and i think it’s useful even on ios because i don’t want to move my hand up there to scroll to top
1 14but if we’re only removing it on the root tabs, you can just press the tab buttons no?
1 4idk double tapping the home icon to me isn’t super intuitive. particularly if you don’t know it’s a common ios design thing
4 9it’s not a double tap tho is it? it’s a single tap, it performs exactly the same function
for comparison, this is how twitter does it
you should copy twitter again
1 13i think i like this better actually its more informative about you receiving new posts from specific people too.
1 3blue dot on home icon is a pretty common affordance for that reason I think
personally I've never used the fab because tab bar is right there
1 3Double tapping? If I'm on the home tab and tap once it goes to top, and it feels intuitive
The round scroll to top thing is obtrusive when I'm doing a long scroll, would honestly love to see it go 👀
1So like, where would it still show up? Because when you're deeper in the nav hierarchy like inside a thread, then there's no button anyway, right?
1I don't know about Android but on iPhone the FAB is doing two things synchronously...
1 - Scroll to top of content
2 - Load new content
The iOS way to do 1 is to tap the screen at the top... above the notch... and this works in bsky as expected.
So why not extend that to double tap for more?
1 1tapping the butterfly already does that
1 1 2hahahahahhah!
Excellent.
1 1So just move FAB to an option?
1 1I hate maintaining one billion terrible options for people that refuse to accept change even if the ui sucks sorry
2 3fwiw people adapt. Discord proves this anytime they do a (good) redesign and people whine for a week before they forget about how it used to be
2 3I mean... yeah. So just delete? Why do people love it?
We are in this liminal ux space where some folk have realised that the controls should be by the thumbs and some still default to the top of screen. iOS has started to push stuff down but it's still a building site with lawyers in the JCBs.
1 1So we get these weird things where the OS does something badly for everyone and different apps do it differently bad for their users. People get attached to both bad takes.
1 1My unpopular take is that phones should be small enough again that you're able to reach things that are at the top
