even without accounting for the a11y angle, i genuinely can't see this working well on older/less powerful devices :/ like yeah it looks super cool but damn it has to be more process intensive

I think it would be more performant! Currently they use a massive blur, which works by sampling the image in a lot of places and averaging them. Lens distortion works by sampling the texture in just one place (offset by more complex math, but the offsets will stay constant so we can precompute them)

It looks like the colors on the very edge come from a physically based chromatic aberration, which is pretty cool, so they likely sample the texture in three places, not one, but still, that's going to be a lot better than a blur

It depends if it uses a performance core or not. And it depends how the frequency scaling is set up. But obviously it's super dope. People who run their phones at 120 HZ will do this just for vibes.

i mean they both do frequency scaling depending on load. my bad for mixing up the architecture. Ya so.. some gpu components can turn off; not all shader pipelines have to use power, so it's functionally similar to perf/vs eco cores.

It's absolutely pointless and has no place in a user interface. It amounts to a concept done by an eager design student that got featured on Behance or Codrops. Like, good job I guess?

i feel like someone at apple made a cool shader and was like ugh this is so cool let's just use it for everything

Huh that's actually pretty slick, I didn't realize it was doing all the distortion and color fringing from the few clips I saw

I trust apple to fix all the hard to read issues and make the really cool design work. They have managed this multiple times in the past

oooooh that does look nice!! if i was on iOS this will probably annoy me over time tho... surely this can be disabled? right?
