we can’t because it doesn’t work until you’ve liked a bunch of things, so it understands you. I’d like to promote it more though
2 5Also it runs on @spacecowboy17.bsky.social's home gaming PC, so probably shouldn't be the default for 40 million people. Something like it, but with bootstrapping for new users, would be ideal though
2 5that it the obvious other reason - we’d like the default experience to run on our own infra so we can make sure it scales etc
1 6What QPS does Discover serve today? For You serves ~20-25 (not counting the limit=1 requests)
1 6my milkman calculations give me 625 qps
(25/40000)*1000000
2 3That's interesting! Your assumption is that For You has 40K daily users and Discover has 1M, right?
Here are some For You numbers for yesterday:
- 70K users
- 48K users who liked at least one post in For You
- 770K likes on posts that were shown in For You
- 1.62M feed requests
2 3oh wow more users than actual likes, wouldn't have expected that.
I thought it would be like 40k likes and idk 8k users.
also I am aware that my calculation is heavily flawed lol
1 3Yes, liking the feed involves quite a few clicks. Once you have pinned the feed you would need to go out of your way to like it.
That's why I add (with 20% probability) a reminder post into the feed to nudge people to like it: bsky.app/profile/spac...

For reference, of people with 100+ visits - 35% have liked the feed:
- This is 0.47 likes per request
Yesterday Bluesky had (bsky.jazco.dev/stats)
- 22.3M likes - which includes likes on replies that For You and Discover don't show
- 1.2M users who liked at least one post

How many likes out of 22.3M is Discover responsible for? We should exclude likes on replies. I would guess that 30% of the likes are on replies. But why guess? We can sample likes from Jetstream and check if the liked post has a parent. It turns out that 22.7% are on replies.
1 2Which leaves ~17.2M likes on posts.
How many of those likes come from Following? I would guess at least 50%.
Let's say all custom feeds are responsible for 25% and Discover is the remaining 25%.
This would make Discover responsible for 4.3M likes. This is 5.6x more than For You's 770K likes.
1 2Sure, being the default feed means the number of likes per feed request is smaller compared to For You - which self-selects more active/advanced users.
Let's assume it is 50% of For You's request-to-like conversion. This would make Discover handle 11.2x more requests.
1 211.2x is in the same ballpark as your 25x estimate!
2My concern also.
I'd love to have a way to "one-click" a "For You" feed (or others) on my own premises/hardware/servers.
I dislike to rely on external feeds/services, which can be spotty or even "go rogue" at any point. My trust extends to Bluesky (the company), but not much further.
fair enough. not sure what it even displays when you don't have any interaction yet. I just feel like that the current discovery feed hurts user retention (though that's just a guess as I don't have access to your analytics lol)
1 1I think spacecowboy said there's some inoffensive generic things preloaded in there, like cat pictures.
1 2That's what I do for Videos For Your: I have a seed account that has some likes on cute stuff, sports, art and "show less" on politics. When the user has no likes I show the recommendations for that seed account.
