we can’t because it doesn’t work until you’ve liked a bunch of things, so it understands you. I’d like to promote it more though

@samuel.fm
that it the obvious other reason - we’d like the default experience to run on our own infra so we can make sure it scales etc

What QPS does Discover serve today? For You serves ~20-25 (not counting the limit=1 requests)

my milkman calculations give me 625 qps (25/40000)*1000000

That's interesting! Your assumption is that For You has 40K daily users and Discover has 1M, right? Here are some For You numbers for yesterday: - 70K users - 48K users who liked at least one post in For You - 770K likes on posts that were shown in For You - 1.62M feed requests

oh wow more users than actual likes, wouldn't have expected that. I thought it would be like 40k likes and idk 8k users. also I am aware that my calculation is heavily flawed lol

How many likes out of 22.3M is Discover responsible for? We should exclude likes on replies. I would guess that 30% of the likes are on replies. But why guess? We can sample likes from Jetstream and check if the liked post has a parent. It turns out that 22.7% are on replies.

Which leaves ~17.2M likes on posts. How many of those likes come from Following? I would guess at least 50%. Let's say all custom feeds are responsible for 25% and Discover is the remaining 25%. This would make Discover responsible for 4.3M likes. This is 5.6x more than For You's 770K likes.

Sure, being the default feed means the number of likes per feed request is smaller compared to For You - which self-selects more active/advanced users. Let's assume it is 50% of For You's request-to-like conversion. This would make Discover handle 11.2x more requests.

ok that milkman saying apparently doesn't exist in English and just in German, "Milchmädchenrechnung"
