Hey devs! Heads up, we're planning on making some changes to our image CDN tomorrow. - Images will be served as WebP by default - The URL format you get from the Bluesky API will change a little You can look forward to an announcement about image quality soon 👀

existing URLs will still work, and if you really really want a JPEG you can append @jpeg to the end

Please give JPEG its much deserved eternal rest. See also this 🧵 ->

I think it's often overlooked that AVIF is also really good at flat colour & sharp edges. Don't go straight for a lossless format just because it's the kind of image that would look bad as a JPEG. Here's an 11kb image as an AVIF, vs JPEG XL.
A clean looking graphic with sharp lines and crisp colourThe same graphic, but muddy and blocky. The previously sharp lines are blurry.

I secretly hoped that if ever Bluesky would decide to reencode images, you would leapfrog WebP and AVIF to go directly to JPEG XL… maybe next time hehe

hilarious but also, webp is 16 years old by now. what doesn’t support it at this point? is this actually an impediment or just a cultural meme?

My dude, it's a serious impediment. Upload forms don't accept it. Lots of OSes can't open it. Confuses the normies who have no idea what it is. It's a real bad idea the moment you get even a little bit out of the realm of people who only think about webdev all day.

Oh, good, ANOTHER website I have to convert images into something I can actually use after downloading them from. Thanks.

You will still be able to download jpeg versions from Bluesky by adding @jpeg at the end of the image URL. 🙂

the only change I would request is, if possible, offer a "Save as (universally supported format)" button too. i love webp/avif but goddamn adoption has been weirdly slow

(to be clear i don't know if you can even influence a browser to provide an additional save option upon rightclick/longpress, but if it is it'd be nice to have)

mmm yeah seems like “save as jpg” button would be popular

If Bluesky wants to support #HDR images, as produced by many modern smart phones, webp is not capable. Ultra JPG (jpg + gainmap), AVIF (high bitdepth or gainmap, second broadest browser support after UltraJPG) or JPEG XL all do support HDR.

As is your right. :) That being said, webp will discard user data by throwing out the higher bitdepth information they upload to Bluesky, whereas the other formats will not. Those users will only notice that their photos look washed-out and dark on Bluesky, whereas they look fine on other platforms.

People always hate on webp until they learn about how incredible the compression is

It's more about lacking support to use the image outside of a viewing. Many apps sure have view support but people also use images for other purposes, and that's where WebP is lacking. Even in Android, not everyone is on the latest Android version. And even if their version can display WebP, …

… it doesn't mean it can view all WebP images. If the encoding used was the latest, it might fail in Android versions and software that still have no support for those changes. And again we go back to, us pro-WebP are mostly living on the edge. We like the latest and forget that we're actually …

WebP’s lossy compression absolutely sucks. Has the worst compression artifacts that degrades visual quality. I would much rather see JPEG XL instead.

If you're interested in a much better WebP encoder, let me know ... mail [at] halide [dot] cx Iris-WebP is up to 50% better than JPEG, and even outperforms AVIF encoders like SVT-AV1 in perceptual image metrics. WebP FTW :)
Iris-WebP encoder performance on a BD-rate to speed graph. Encoders closer to the top left of the graph are better. Iris-WebP is at the Pareto front for image compression in SSIMULACRA2, a perceptual image metric with high correlation with subjective quality. 1 1 2

dont you just love that you have to convert every single picture you save to something that companies *actually* use because one guy decided webp's have a better vibe? someone tell facebook messenger and imgur that webps are better than pngs.

Will we then be able to enlarge to readability? Looking forward to the magnifier working more than one click...

does the change imply that the future uploaded PNGs will show up lossless now? because it's great if that's the case.

But how will I steal memes now. I’d have to do some level of effort and that unacceptable.
