strongly feel in this day and age you should be defaulting to vite+react and only reach for nextjs if you have a specific reason

My last dozen project are built on it! I find it to be pretty amazing for building apps My one ding is no server components but they have something they released recently The query integration can’t be beat!

maybe it’s a me problem or the projects i look at but i find the server parts nearly unreadable

:( big start fan myself, it solves a lot of really hard problems that most frameworks faceplant on

ah might be the difference, typically have a separate server. Tanstack does super well for SSR / prefetching. Almost everything I do is now on it. No idea what the fullstack looks like.

The cache system probably. It is complicated, it changes too often and on larger projects outside of vercel, you run into numerous things, like rsc and disk spaces issues. But I take it every time.

How about defaulting to a framework that already includes stuff like SSR and SSG and actually does it well? 😁 *cough, cough* svelte

I will never fault someone for using svelte it’s a lot of fun

You should be defaulting to lit-html and bespoke implementation of the TC39 signals proposal

nextjs is Fine, doing SSG with it is easy and it has a lot of defaults, mostly decent ones I think a better reason not to use nextjs is just not liking vercel

no i stand by this, every time i open a project I haven’t touched in 5 minutes it inexplicably breaks in the most convoluted ways. just far too clever for its own good

nowadays I've been defaulting to react+vite for SPAs and astro+vite for static sites

It's been a while since I last worked with React, does plain Vite + React perform any sort of SSR now?

Samuel
yeah I think you can use React Router for that pretty seamlessly nowadays?

And to think I didn't get hired at Bluesky because I hadn't done react recently.. 😅😭

my current (Claude) project is vite react and it has been very snappy & performant and easy to work with so I agree 👍

I thought next.js will help me in some issues. It did! But also came with a lot of others. Although I recognize it's an impressive stack, I deeply regret using it in particular use cases where vite + react would do the job.

I agree with going away from NextJS. Though I'd argue that we should be finding the right tool for the job that fits our needs. I've been exploring Go and Svelte recently and it's been a joy. I also generally like moving away from React since Vercel has it under their thumb.

But I would prefer if we encouraged people to try more tools and find whatever works for them or for whatever solution they are solving. Locking to a default framework can cause you to get stuck.

at most add on a router (react router or tanstack) and you're covered for 90% of use cases
