Can you guys please stop shipping vastly superior features compared to Threads despite having a fraction of Meta’s resources? (The video player on Threads is notoriously bad)

yeah I'm using their one as a feature baseline lol, I was surprised at how basic it is

ooh yes (consider a border for contrast too) but also no subtitle/caption button, consider hiding buttons for unreleased features, consider a PiP button, and move the progress off the edge if you can (like how twitter/youtube do it) but like... pretty cool 👀

ah yeah we'll have captions. PiP is a bit out of scope. and I'll move the progress up once scrubbing is implemented (otherwise people will try and click on it and be disappointed)

it's a default-on setting - but for bsky (and similar apps where you expect a user doing multiple things), there's a surprising (well...) amount of nuance

I wonder if the PiP could already be available with Firefox, Opera & Vivaldi since all three embark a quite good PiP player that can work with pretty much every video player. Would love to test :p

yeah problem comes when you scroll the original post out of view. things could get weird

someone sends me a DM with an embedded vid, hit play, click PiP, back to main timeline (what happens?), see another video, press play on it (what happens to PiP?), etc. etc. we should make apps that only do one thing at once

Testing out 1.5mbps 720p for the "high res" streams and something like 750kbps 360p for the non-maximized streams rn. I think it's so blurry in the image because it's a screenshot of the player in the TL and not maximized so it's just stretching a small number of cropped pixels.

Also I think we're gonna be doing something like 3mbps max for the "source" files that live on the PDS. Uploads will get processed and mixed down to a decent CRF setting to maintain visual quality but max out at 3mbps to keep file sizes reasonable for large volumes.

either we're going to turn samuel into a professional border-radius user, or he's going to start setting each corner to different values out of spite

This is ideal for the low attention span that modern social media should strive to capture

mmm yeah they're pretty hard to parse when they're edge to edge like that i think i'd put a bit of distance the closest inspiration would be chrome's video player i think?

Is this how it looks without focus? Just after losing focus? I'd definitely want the bar at the bottom to get darker or something when focused because it's hard to read how it is, but I don't think I'd want it there like that the whole time either. Looks nice and clean though!

Yeah maybe a slightly less subtle touch then. Weirdly I may not have noticed the problem if you'd used a darker video haha

So nice! Could you please, please I beg you, consider implementing the `K` keyboard shortcut to play/pause the video, and a bigger-but-not-full-screen "theatre" mode on desktop? Those are the two features I keep missing on non-YouTube video players. Doing so, you'd do better than 99% of them!

Just seeing it I’m thinking 10/10 only because I still remember when you told me doing this was very very hard. But I do like the v2 you shared (contrast, captions, etc)
